A workbook is a multiple page booklet that can be designed to deliver content and interactive material to the user for learning, revision or for assessment. A workbook typically contains multiple templates but can also contain holders for users to add Blogs, Portfolio Pages, and Collections. Workbooks can be used for many different purposes, but perhaps the most common are for:
- Interactive course material
- Clinical placement workbooks
- Evidencing professional registration requirements
- Evidencing professional competences
- Project workbooks

Nursing - Electronic Practice Assessment Document (University of Nottingham, UK)

The multi page workbook contains everything that students and mentors need to record progress against the key standards and competences. Sections include:
- Links to help materials, including a screencast video (Vodcast) explaining how to navigate the workbook and complete the various sections, and in-page help with asset linking.
- Links to templates for collating evidence.
- Timesheets for recording hours worked.
- Space for recording meetings and action plans.
- Space for attaching evidence of learning and verifying achievement of competence.
- Students are asked to complete the built-in progress tracker so that an ongoing record of progress with completing the documentation is available.
- Pages are time released as students progress through the programme.

Here at PebblePad we like to practise what we preach! We use workbooks to create a scaffolded induction experience for new employees, to support them during their first weeks and months. What isn't visible in the example below is that we also use progress tracking to be able to quickly see where any new staff member is up to in their induction process.
Development of an ePortfolio for Pre-registration student nurses (University of Derby, UK)
This workbook was designed to help prepare learners for Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements for revalidation, to demonstrate continuous learning and professional development. The team from the University of Derby presented a poster outlining their work at the Networking For Education In Healthcare (NET) Conference in 2017. This poster was awarded Best poster.

Using workbooks to make meaning of Graduate Attributes (University of the Sunshine Coast, AUS)

Graduate Attributes can be used in tertiary education to closely frame student learning for career and future employability. Since Bowden et al (2000), tertiary institutions have grappled with the use and deployment of Graduate Attributes across their curriculum. USC academics have worked to embed these attributes into course and program curriculum since 2009 and attributes are linked to assessment tasks and course outcomes. However, there has been limited follow up on how students are making sense of, or understanding these attributes. In an institution-wide first-year course USC explored how students make meaning with these career-focused attributes and implemented a task-based workbook where students could evaluate and reflect on their own development of these important skills and qualities.
This example highlights how this ePortfolio workbook assists meaning-making and captures valuable insights into how students link their learning to Graduate Attribute development through week-to-week reflective practice.
Using PebblePad for Professional Development in Universities (University of the Sunshine Coast, AUS)

At the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in Queensland, Australia, PebblePad has been introduced university-wide as a teaching and learning tool. While the focus during rollout has been on program-wide alignment and mapping to ensure a consistent student experience, attention has also been given to the ways that PebblePad can be used for professional development in the institution. This workbook shows examples of three staff initiatives.
- In the first example resources have been created to support staff performance management.
- The second example is a workbook developed in conjunction with Paramedicine to capture professional development (PD) by sessional staff.
- The third and final example is a workbook to support academics in their applications for OLT (the Office of Learning and Teaching) teaching citations.
Paramedicine demonstration workbook (PebblePad)
This workbook was created as an example of a resource to support a clinical placement experience. It contains:
- crucial placement information,
- places for pre-placement activities such as preparation, reflection and goal-setting,
- placement blog
- a Collection for completed case reviews
- post placement reflection and space for supervisor comments
